Guwahati| In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India campaign, BSNL will connect 1518 gram panchayats in Assam with optical fibre cables within this year.
Briefing about initiatives taken under the Digital India program, Chief General Manager of BSNL, Assam Circle M K Seth said that 5200 kilometers length of optical fibres will be laid this year.
Seth said that Khetri Gaon Panchayat on the outskirts of capital Guwahati is all set to be the first digital gaon panchayat of the country.
Seth said stress has been given to provide better and affordable connection at rural areas.
He said that BSNL will provide 3,000 hot spot at important places very soon. He also said BSNL has taken steps for automatic hook up point through wireless network. High speed network will be installed in Guwahati by March this year.
In association with SBI, BSNL will soon start e-wallet mobicash to aid cashless transaction.
Joint Secretary of Assam IT department Fakar Uddin Ahmed said that target has been set to make 1 lakh people digitally literate by March this year. He said 65,000 people have already been trained in this direction. He said the target is to make digitally literate 25 lakh people by 2022 for which Assam government has taken a holistic approach.
Ahmed further disclosed that the Assam government has set a target to provide TV, internet and telephone connection through a single connection in every household. He said that the programme will be started at Khetri in Kamrup (metro) district and project has been prepared to cover the entire Kamrup Metro and Kamrup Rural districts initially at a project cost of Rs 97 crore.
