Itanagar| Plans are afoot to declare Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri as an organic district.
A District Level Implementation Committee meeting on Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD-NER) was held at Ziro, the census town of the district, on Friday.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Nending Chatung said with the completion of this three-year project, farmers should have accessibility to improved agriculture services and better access to markets and a better livelihood. At the same time need-based infrastructures like cool rooms should be identified and prioritized, he said.
The mission is part of the flagship program under PMO’s vision to brand North East Region as the organic hub of the world.
Deputy Director Agriculture-cum-MOVCD-NER member secretary, Boria Nakum said farmers in Ziro have been practicing organic cultivation since couple of years especially in kiwi gardens. He further suggested for declaring the district as “organic district” to phase out use of chemical fertilizers in other parts of the district and replace it with organic fertilizers at the earliest. He also insisted on geo tagging of all farmlands for effective monitoring and inspections.
MOVCD Consultant Tushar Ghosh said that two crops have been indentified for organic certification from Lower Subansiri district – Kiwis for Ziro-I circle and Cardamom for Yazali Circle.
ADC Chatung further suggested for including experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra as members of the District Level Implementation Committee to utilize their knowledge and experience pertaining to the agricultural activities in the district.
